Today in STEM club we made our own lava lamps.
We put some oil into a bottle, then added water. The oil and water did not mix and the oil floated on top of the water as it is the less dense of the two. We then added some food colouring so that the layers were easier to see. Finally we added an alka-Seltzer tablet to the bottle. This produced carbon dioxide gas. As the gas was less dense than our liquid layers it rose to the top taking little bubbles of water with it, hence creating the same effect as a lava lamp!!
